This is my website

I have a number of blogs about a number of different things. But rather than keep everything separated out, I’ve decided to amalgamate. This new site is just about me.

My personal blogs have been on a bit of a hiatus for some time now, and although I’ve had plenty to report, I’ve held back on writing while I tried to figure out what I was trying to say on the internet, who I was trying to say it to, and to what end.

I thought the occasion of my 40th birthday (near enough — it’s later this week) would be a good milestone to launch the new phase of my online life.

Up until now, I’ve had a presence in a number of places. The Wireless was my first blog, and that’s been running continuously for over five years. I started a personal blog on a free Wordpress site a year or so back, which was a good place to keep my music-only stuff reasonably separate. I’ve also started a fledgling whisky blog, and I occasionally remember to post to my Tumblelog.

But as time goes on, we change our minds about what we’re trying to achieve. Or at least, I do.

Of course, it’s still true that there’ll be people who are, for instance, interested in me writing about music, but not in me writing about a family trip or a bottle of whisky. But it feels kind of artificial to separate these things out. I’m as interested in each of these things — and blogging about them is just a kind of self-expression. Juggling that many outlets is a bit overwhelming — and I really only have one self to express.

So this is just me. Sometimes I’ll write about something you’ll like, sometimes I’ll write about something you’re not too interested in. I’ll separate it out by category for your convenience, but for the sake of finally having a real home online, this is it.

This site will act as a kind of an online business card, a portal to all of the other stuff I do and an easy way to find out what I’m up to and thinking about — for whatever reason you might be interested. I’ve written pages and pages on all of my activities and interests… my consultancy work, my research, my family and my interests. That stuff’s all awaiting finishing touches and will be live on the site in due course.

In the meantime, I thought I was overdue in keeping you up to date with all I’ve been up to, and this seemed the right time to launch the new site.

I’ll keep New Music Strategies going as it is — because that’s a separate entity with a life of its own. And I’ll be starting a new website for my new record label — of which, more very soon.

In the meantime, welcome to the new phase of my online life. It’ll be necessarily diverse, and will not specialise in the way I usually recommend that people do online — but the common thread will be me.

Hopefully, that’ll be interesting enough. Shouldn’t be too hard to remember the address…

Right now:

In something of a reversal in official Dubber policy, I've started following some students on Twitter. Awaiting tales of beer & cold pizza.

  4. Cool site, and what a serious photo!

My 40s were when I finally knew what I wanted to do and had the capacity to do it which is a rare combination so I hope this is when it all comes together for you.

  7. Rationalisation is a very good idea and the blog has a nice coherent feel to it.

Your post raised a couple of questions for me: 1) Did you find the ease of setting up profiles all over the Internet was quickly addictive?, and 2) Why just focus on the remaining selection of services (as listed on your frontpage)?

dont’ know if you’ve got a Morrisons supermarket near you, but apparently they’re doing bottles of Glenfiddich for £14. not a bad one to compare others to…
