I was taken out to lunch by one of jazz’s most accomplished pianists — D.D. Jackson. He reads my other blog, New Music Strategies and wanted to interview me for his podcast.

One of the people who helped me get to the US to attend the CMJ Music Marathon was jazz pianist and Downbeat Magazine contributor D.D. Jackson. I first came across his music when I was doing the George FM jazz show in New Zealand, and his label, Justin Time started sending me promo discs.
He came to my panel session about the future of the music business, and then we met the following day for lunch at what is supposedly NY’s Best Pizzeria (though to be fair, I was taken to several NY’s Best Pizzerias that week).
After lunch, we looked around for a place for him to sit and record an interview with me for his podcast. We settled on Washington Square Park, where there was a busking jazz band, which made a nice audio backdrop, along with the city park sounds.
Unfortunately, I had something of a cold and had been out the night before, so I had almost entirely lost my voice. And it wasn’t even that cool, husky thing you sometimes get in those situations. It was the occasionally inaudible, squeaky kind of voice loss that makes you sound like you’ve swallowed one of those party streamer things you blow through and they uncurl (what are those called?).
We spoke for about an hour, and afterwards, we threw something in the hat for the jazz band. I mean, the guy can play two trumpets at once. How cool is that?
D.D. was lovely, as I’d expected. Smart man, amazingly talented and really good company. Hope I haven’t ruined his lovely podcast by wheezing all over it.
